11 Ways To Add Springtime Cheer To Your Home

Winter and its chilly embrace are moving out and making way for warmer days. It’s a great feeling to shake off the dreariness that often accompanies the winter, with its shorter days and icy temps. To welcome the sunshine and overall spirit of spring, it helps to add some springtime cheer to your home.
Get rid of clutter, deep clean your house, and open windows to refresh your home and hit the reset button after the winter. Swap accessories for colorful options that evoke springtime vibes, and add fresh flowers to your decor list. Spruce up the front porch, switch to lighter curtains and bedding, and move furniture around to take advantage of natural light.
It’s easy to give your home a boost and awaken a sense of renewal, energy, and happiness in time for the spring. Plus, many of these tips cost nothing or very little, making it possible to invite spring into your home, no matter what your budget.
1. Declutter
Topping the list is getting rid of excess clutter if you want to make your home feel more like spring. Stuff tends to accumulate during the year, especially after the busy holiday season. Suddenly, you’re facing even more clutter thanks to gifts, extra holiday decorations — you name it.
Clutter negatively affects your mood, which is the opposite of how you want to feel. (Especially during spring when it’s all about feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.) Therefore, start going through your inventory to see what needs to go.
Start with the new stuff. Ask yourself if you really want it. Or could it perhaps replace something you already have that’s worn out or doesn’t work as well? Don’t simply begin trying to organize all of your new items because it’s ultimately a waste of time. Declutter before you organize to truly make a difference.
2. Lighten The Window Treatments
If you have heavy drapes, consider swapping them with lighter sheers or at least a lighter-weight fabric. This quick flip provides an airier touch to your home and also makes it feel brighter and fresher. You might even decide to stick with the softer curtains all year long.
Of course, this tip isn’t for specialized rooms, like a media room where you want it to be blacked out at any time. You also may prefer heavier, black-out curtains for your bedroom. However, think of other options if these heavy window treatments start to feel oppressive.
For example, try shades or blinds and frame the window with a set of delicate sheers. Or if the curtains are dark, try a lighter color. If expenses and practicality don’t allow you to change your window treatments, at least keep them open as much as possible.
3. Swap Accessories With Cheery Options
After you put away your holiday decorations, assess your everyday home decor. If it tends to resemble Darth Vader (it’s joined the Dark Side), you’re likely not creating springtime cheer. Swap out throw pillows, blankets, vases, and other accessories with lighter, brighter options.
If you prefer a more subtle style, go with soft pastels and light neutrals. But if you want lots of springtime flair in your home, pick a few bright, bold colors. Depending on how big of an impact you want to make, you may do a lot, or you may simply change the pillows on the couch and trade out tea towels.
4. Incorporate Fresh Spring Blooms
Springtime is all about renewal and new life, so what better way to add spring to your home than with something living? Treat yourself to some lovely, fresh flowers and place them in a beautiful vase on your kitchen table.
Add another bouquet to your living room and your bedroom, perhaps a small bud vase in the bathrooms. If you’re not used to maintaining real plants, set a reminder on your phone or voice assistant to check on them. Change the water, snip stems, clip dead leaves, etc.
5. Do Some Spring Cleaning
Here’s another tip to add springtime touches to your home without spending a dime — a good old-fashioned deep clean. Get to work spring cleaning your house from top to bottom. It’s best if you do it after you finish decluttering (less stuff to work around and move out of the way).
You don’t have to clean your entire house in one day. Give yourself a time frame (two days, two weeks), whatever works for you. Work by task or by room, depending on your preference. In other words, maybe one day you dust the whole house, then the next you decide to do all the floors or wash the curtains. Or, do everything in one room, then move on to the next.
There are pros and cons to every cleaning style, so it really comes down to your personal preferences. But for spring cleaning, just make sure you’re tackling the things you don’t typically do during your normal tidying sessions.
6. Opt For Lighter Bedding
Going hand-in-hand with swapping to lighter window treatments, think about doing the same with your bedding. Lightweight sheets and blankets also make more sense as the weather warms.
Your bedroom will look and feel like springtime and you’ll sleep better. For example, linen and cotton bedding are good picks for spring thanks to their breathability and cooling, moisture-wicking qualities.
Changing your bedding with the seasons can also help extend its lifespan. For example, most experts recommend replacing sheets every two years. However, this depends on how much you use them and wash them. If you have a couple of sets for the fall and winter and swap them out for others in the spring and summer, they’ll likely last longer.
7. Create A Spring-Inspired Tablescape
Deck out your table for a springtime brunch (even if you’re not planning one). It looks inviting and cheery. This works well in a dining room that you may not use very often. Who knows, it might inspire you to plan that brunch after all.
But if it’s a table you use every day, keep it flexible. Try a fun, springtime centerpiece and a vibrant tablecloth to add a dash of springtime cheer to your home.
8. Rearrange The Furniture To Maximize Natural Light
Springtime also means longer days, since the clocks spring forward courtesy of Daylight Savings Time (at least for now). Take advantage of the extra natural light during your waking hours by moving the furniture around.
Maximize the sunlight even more by strategically placing mirrors throughout the house. A room full of sunshine instantly brightens the space and your mood, and it’s free.
9. Freshen Up Your Front Porch
Get your porch ready for spring with a few simple touches. Pressure wash the grime, replace the welcome mat, paint the front door a bright color, and add some fresh plants. Clean the light fixture and replace any burnt-out bulbs.
Paint or replace fading house numbers, make sure the doorbell works, and tidy up the stoop and walkway. The front of your home should welcome you when you arrive, making you feel glad to be back.
10. Brighten Your Garden
Dead leaves, twigs, and forgotten flowers are often synonymous with the winter, especially if you’re not the green thumb type. Clean out the mess and plant fresh blooms that say, “Hello, Spring!” Freshen mulch and eradicate weeds and unsightly overgrowth.
If you’re worried about taking care of flowers, add some colorful touches in other ways. For example, a low-maintenance shrub or plant in a brightly-colored flower pot or planter, some colorful stones, or a peppy garden flag.
11. Open The Windows
Here’s another freebie to add springtime cheer to your home; open the windows. Take advantage of pleasant, cool days and more sunshine, and let all the stale air out of your house. Embrace the cross-ventilation, breathe in the freshness, and enjoy the benefits of welcoming spring into your home.
