Generally, LG is synonymous with quality products, but when it comes to fridges, they definitely have some models that are lacking. From fridges last 2 years or less to various parts breaking, LG refrigerators have their share of issues.

LG recalled 20,000 fridge units on June 29th, 2005. These units had a faulty component in the condenser fan motor, which can lead to a short circuit. Further, it was said this could cause the condenser fan motor to overheat. When this happens, it is a potential fire hazard.

LG fridges cost thousands of dollars, and the repair bills add up really quickly too. We feel your pain. Let’s see which LG fridge models have been recalled, and how you can file a claim and maybe take advantage of the pending class-action lawsuit.

Current LG Refrigerator Recall List

The fridges that were recalled in June of 2005 were sold as LG brand refrigerators from May 2004 through May 2005. Consumers paid between $1,400 and $2,400 for these fridges. Listed below are the models numbers recalled.

How Long Is The LG Warranty?

LG offers just a 1-year warranty for parts and labor. If you purchased the extended coverage plan, you’re covered for 5 years for parts and labor. Specifically for the inverter compressor, you get a 10-year warranty for this part (probably because it goes often).

So basically, if you bought your LG fridge and got the extended warranty less than 5 years ago, you may be eligible for free repair or a full refund.

Are Other Homeowners Dealing with a Faulty LG Fridge Too?

You bet. There’s a Facebook group with more than 2,000 homeowners who have reported issues with their LG refrigerator. By far, the biggest issue with LG fridges is with their ice maker. Another common issue is a faulty linear compressor.

Here’s the group:

What is the Status of the LG Lawsuit?

LG Refrigerator’s appeal was dismissed on January 6, 2021 very quickly. A $1.5 million class-action settlement was reached to resolve the claims against LG appliances suffering from a cooling defect. Also, the compressor in certain models fails to maintain the temperature levels needed to preserve food.

However, keep in mind that the deadline for a claim for no-Cooling Events that occurred prior to September 22, 2020 has passed. If you have already filed, look out for an email from DoNotReply@LGFridgeSettlement.com about any notices or settlement benefits.

Should I Contact LG First? What Are Other Homeowners Experiencing?

The first step will be to file a claim with LG directly. However, many homeowners are not having much luck contacting LG directly. One person who owned an LG fridge said it took months for her to get any form of compensation for the loss of food and renting another fridge.

In another instance, another homeowner was told they’ll get a check and they never received the compensation. Seems like a lot of people are getting the runaround, but try talking to them first before you do anything else.

How Do I Contact LG About My Fridge Refund or Potential Recall?

Customers can call LG toll-free at (888) 294-5782 or go to http://us.lge.com/ for more information on specific LG models included in the repair program. Also, by speaking to their customer service, you may be able to arrange for an in-home appointment to repair your current fridge.

What Else Can I Do?

Don’t give up. Start with filing a claim with LG. If they don’t help, file a complaint with your state’s consumer affairs division. At the same time, check if your fridge model qualifies for the class action lawsuit.

Also, one customer had some luck with calling LG and demanding to speak with someone in the “defective repairs” department. They may help you isolate the issue, or deem the fridge irreparable, in which case you may be entitled to a refund via a claim.

At the very least, try to get LG to send out a repair person to replace the compressor or whatever issue you’re having with your fridge.
